WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - With the minor league baseball season completed, several former Wake Forest baseball players have been called up to the major leagues. Here's an update on how former Deacons are faring in the pros.
Matt Antonelli (2004-06) - Called up to the majors by San Diego once his minor league season ended ... Has played in 13 games with the Padres, with a .235 batting average, a home run and three RBIs ... Went 2-for-4 against Colorado (9/15) and hit his first major league home run with two RBIs and two runs scored ... Hit .215 with Portland this season, but did finish the season strong with a .290 batting average in August ... Finished the minor league season with seven home runs and 39 RBIs.
Ryan Braun (2000-02) - Hard-throwing reliever for the Kansas City Royals, who underwent reconstructive elbow surgery earlier this year and is out for the season ... In the previous two seasons, he appeared in 35 games for the Royals with a 6.66 ERA and 2-1 record ... Assigned this spring to Triple-A Omaha but never pitched before undergoing surgery.
Dave Bush (1999-2002) - Currently a starting pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers ... Has a 9-10 record with a 4.24 earned run average in 28 games, including 27 starts ... Threw eight strong innings against Cincinnati (9/8), allowing only two runs and striking out three, but received a no decision.
Jamie D'Antona (2001-03) - Currently playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks ... Has played in 17 games, with 16 at-bats ... Currently hitting .188 with two runs scored and an RBI ... Made first start in the major leagues against Atlanta (8/10), drawing two walks and scoring a run ... Finished the minor league season at Tucson with a team-best .365 batting average and had 21 home runs and 79 RBIs.
Allan Dykstra (2006-08) - Started his professional career with Lake Elsinore, a single-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres ... Played in seven games in the regular season, hitting .292 with a home run and 10 RBIs ... Team advanced to the Cal League Southern Division Finals, dropping the series to Lancaster ... Dykstra hit .158 with a double and an RBI during the playoffs.
Josh Ellis (2004-07) - Currently a relief pitcher for the Visalia Oaks in the Single-A Advanced California League ... Finished the minor league season with a 2-3 record and a 2.40 ERA ... Recorded seven saves during the season, which ranked second on the team ... Notched a save in the final regular season game of the year, a 6-3 victory at Stockton (9/1).
Andy Goff (2004-08) - Finished the season with the Tri-City Dust Devils of the Class-A Short Season Northwest League ... Hit .095 with the Dust Devils, hitting one home run and scoring two runs ... Went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a homer in victory over Boise (8/2).
Mike MacDougal (1997-99) - Currently a relief pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, after playing most of the season with Triple-A affiliate Charlotte ... Has made five appearances since being recalled by the White Sox, only allowing one run ... Finished the minor league season with an 0-4 record with a 3.83 ERA ... Also recorded four saves for Charlotte.
Eric Niesen (2005-07) - Starting pitcher for the St. Lucie Mets in the Single-A Advanced Florida State League ... Finished the year with a 6-12 record and a 4.64 ERA ... Threw six innings against Palm Beach (8/11), allowing only one run, while striking out five.
Cory Sullivan (2000-01) - Outfielder for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, the Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies ... Recorded a .320 batting average during the 2008 season, with seven home runs and 47 RBIs ... Went 3-for-5, with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored against Tucson (8/25).
