Wake Forest Rolls Past NC State In Three

RALEIGH, NC - Four different Demon Deacons notched double-digit digs and junior Lauren McIntyre posted a match-high 15 kills as the Wake Forest volleyball team rolled past NC State in three sets for its fifth victory in the conference.
The Deacons, who are now 7-12 overall and 5-3 in the ACC, beat NC State for the 22nd straight time and swept the Wolfpack for the 15th time in the last 19 meetings. With the loss, NC State falls to 7-15 overall and 0-7 in the conference. Wake went on to take set victories of 29-27, 25-16, 25-19.
McIntyre led all attackers with 15 kills and hit a sensational .609 with three blocks. This was the fifth time in the last six matches that McIntyre has hit better than .455 in a match.
Sophomore's Carlin Salmon and Kadija Fornah each notched 10 kills on the night for the Deacs while Salmon led the squad with four blocks. Setter Kelsey Jones also notched her eighth double-double of the season in the win, dishing out 44 assists and collecting a season-best 17 digs. The Ada, Mich., native also had five kills and two blocks on the night.
In addition to Jones, juniors Megan Thornberry, Kristen White and senior Abby Miller also recorded double-digit digs. Thornberry finished with 16 digs and five assists while Miller chipped in with 14 digs and White had 13 digs and eight kills. The 76 digs on the night for the Deacs were the second-most all season and the most in any three-set match.
For the Wolfpack, Keri DeMar and Margaret Salata each finished with nine kills while Isis Gardner chipped in with eight. Libero Lindsay Benac collected a match-high 20 digs and setter Alex Smith dished out 29 assists.
As a team, the Deacs hit .304 with 56 kills and just 14 errors compared to a .154 hitting percentage for NC State. Wake also won the battle defensively at the net, notching 6.5 blocks to five for State.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the first set, a kill by White sparked a 10-5 run for the Deacs that gave them a 14-9 advantage. McIntyre had a pair of kills during the spurt as freshman Andrea Beck, Jones and Salmon also added kills.
Wake held the five-point advantage until State went on a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 19-17. The Deacs then took a set-point at 24-21 but the Wolfpack would score three-straight points to even the score at 24-all. The teams traded sideouts until a kill by Wood gave NC State a set-point at 27-26. Wake then got three-straight kills from Oehler, Beck and McIntyre to win the emotional first-set 29-27.
McIntyre had five kills in the set for the Deacs while Jones notched a double-double in the first set alone, picking up 11 digs and 18 assists. Thornberry led Wake in the first stanza with a total of 12 digs.
The Deacs kept the momentum rolling in the second set and would open-up a 7-3 lead. Wake would never relinquish the lead the rest of the set and would eventually take as much as a nine-point lead before winning the set 25-16.
McIntyre and White each had five kills and no errors for a .714 hitting percentage in the second set while Miller picked up six digs. Wake also hit a solid .429 in the set with18 kills and 3.5 blocks.
The break did little to slow the Deacs as a kill from McIntyre broke a 5-5 tie in the third and sprung Wake on a 14-6 run that gave them a commanding 19-11 lead. McIntyre had three kills during the run while Salmon chipped in with two.
State would only get as close as six the rest of the way as Wake finished-off the set and the match with a 25-19 victory. McIntyre had another five kills and hit .833 in the final set.
The Deacons will look for a second-straight road victory this Sunday as they travel to Chapel Hill, NC, for a 1 pm match against North Carolina. The Tar Heels defeated rival Duke 3-1 on Friday night. Live scoring of the match can be found through CSTV's Gametracker.
