CLEMSON, SC - Clemson used a balanced attack Saturday night to post a three-set victory over the Wake Forest volleyball team in Jervey Gym.
The win (25-10, 25-22, 25-23) improved the Tigers to 6-5 in the conference and 16-7 overall. Wake falls to 7-15 on the year and 5-6 in the ACC with the setback.
Clemson's Sandra Adeleye led all attackers with 16 kills on the evening with a solid .560 hitting percentage. She also blocked a total of four attacks. Lia Procter also finished the night with four blocks to go along with her nine kills and seven digs.
Sophomore Kadija Fornah led the Deacons with 11 kills and two blocks while middle blocker Carlin Salmon chipped in with 10 kills and four blocks.
Defensively, senior Abby Miller collected a total of 10 digs to lead the Demon Deacons. She moved into seventh all-time in school history and is now just six digs shy of 1,000 for her career. Setter Kelsey Jones added six digs and dished out a total of 31 assists. Last night against Georgia Tech, Jones recorded her 3,000 career assist and now is fourth in school-history with 3,044 assists.
Junior Lauren McIntyre finished the match with five kills and three blocks, moving to seventh in school history with 269 career blocks.
The Tigers out-dug Wake on the night 47 to 31 and hit a solid .317 with 47 kills. Wake hit just .143 with 36 kills and 20 errors. Both teams finished the evening with nine blocks.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the first set, the Tigers got a kill from Natalie Patzin to spark a 16-7 that gave them a commanding 18-9 lead. After a block by Jones and freshman Andrea Beck made the score 18-10, Clemson scored the final seven points of the set to take the first 25-10.
Adeleye put away all five of her attack attempts in the set while Wake managed just five kills of its own.
Wake took a 7-5 lead in the second set thanks to a couple of kills by Fornah and Salmon but Clemson would come back to tie the score at 10-10. Kills from Beck and Jones gave Wake another lead at 15-13 but once again, Clemson responded and would tie the score at 16-16.
The score stayed close until kills by Salmon and sophomore Cambrey Oehler gave Wake a 21-20 advantage. But just like the rest of the set, the Tigers came clawing back and would finish the set on a 5-1 run to take a two-sets to none lead.
Adeleye hit .455 in the set with another six kills for Clemson while Fornah and Salmon each had five kills for Wake.
Clemson came out of the locker room and took an early 7-4 lead in the third set but a kill from Beck and back-to-back kills from McIntyre sparked a 9-4 Demon Deacon run that gave the visitors a 13-11 lead.
After a Clemson timeout, a block by Salmon and Jones pushed the Wake lead to 14-11 but Clemson responded with a 9-6 run to tie the score at 20-20. Just like the first two sets, the Tigers finished the set on a run, this time it was a 5-3 run, to close out the match 25-23.
Adeleye posted another five kills in the final set while Salmon had five kills for the Deacs. Miller also collected five of her ten digs in the third set.
Wake will return home next weekend to host Maryland and Boston College. The match against Maryland on Friday will be the Deacons' Dig For a Cure Match. The match is set to begin at 7 pm. The Deacons will then host Boston College on Saturday evening at 7 pm.
