WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest volleyball team is proud to announce its fourth annual Susan G. Komen Dig for a Cure volleyball match, which will be this Friday night at 7 pm against Maryland.
In partnership with the North Carolina Triad Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Wake Forest volleyball team will be soliciting donations from sponsors to either pledge money per dig recorded by the Deacons Friday night or make a flat donation to the cause. There will be a table setup in the lobby of Reynolds Gym for supporters to make donation, buy T-shirts or enter their names for a various number of raffle prizes.
The volleyball team has raised almost $35,000 for the Susan G. Komen fund in the previous three years. The Deacs recorded 67 digs in both 2006 and 2007, raising $12,067.05 in a three-set win over NC State in 2006 and $11,805.50 against Virginia Tech in 2007. The money raised in 2006 was the highest amount by any participating volleyball program in the country.
Last year, the team collected a total of 52 digs in a three-set sweep of Maryland on Oct. 25, raising almost $11,000. Megan Thornberry led the team with 15 digs on the night while Sally Fischer chipped in 12.
"We have had the privilege of working with the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the past few years with our Dig for the Cure match," said head volleyball coach Heather Kahl Holmes. "This disease has affected each and every one of us in one way or another. What an honor it is for our players to be able participate and to give something back for such an important cause."
The Deacons will also take on Boston College Saturday evening at 7 pm. All kids that come dressed in a Halloween costume will receive free admission to the match.
