WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The seventh-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team (12-6) will begin play in the 2009 NCAA Tournament this weekend, hosting 13th-ranked Indiana (14-6) on Saturday, November 14 at 2 p.m.
The 2009 tournament has a field of 16 teams. Wake Forest was selected as one of four opening round sites in addition to Maryland, Princeton and Virginia. One winner from each site will advance to the semifinals, also hosted by Wake Forest, on Friday, November 20. The tournament final will be held on Sunday, November 22 in Winston-Salem.
The third-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (16-2) and 16th-ranked Ohio State (13-6) will open play at Wake Forest on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The winners from Saturday's matches will face each other on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kentner Stadium.
Wake Forest hosted Indiana on September 13, taking a 5-2 victory. The Demon Deacons hold a 6-0 advantage over the Hoosiers in the all-time series, which began in 2003.
Both teams enter the Round of 16 in the NCAA Championships following play in conference tournaments. Indiana fell to Michigan State 3-2 in the Big Ten conference championship match on November 8 and Wake Forest was knocked out in the semifinals by eventual Atlantic Coast Conference Champion Maryland with a score of 3-2.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth/students/seniors (seniors 55+, youth 3-18 and Wake Forest students). Children under 3 are free.
