Volleyball Falls In Four To Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Three different Demon Deacons notched 12 kills Friday night but Virginia's Simone Asque recorded a double-double to lead the Cavaliers to a 3-1 victory over Wake Forest in Memorial Gym.
Virginia improves to 12-15 on the year and 7-9 in the conference while to Deacons fall to 7-9 in the conference with the setback and are now 9-18 overall. UVa won the first set 25-16 but the Deacons would even the score with a 25-21 victory in set two. The Cavaliers then came out of the break and won a hotly contested third set, 26-24 and would roll to a 25-17 victory in the fourth.
Asque finished with a match-high 24 kills to go along with her 11 digs, seven blocks and two services aces. Kendahl Voelker also chipped in with 14 kills and three blocks. Brittani Rendina collected a match-best 27 digs for the Hoos while Tara Hester added 20 digs and AJ Cushman finished with 14.
For the second-straight match, the Deacons were led by double-doubles from juniors Kristen White and Kelsey Jones. White finished with 10 kills and 15 digs on the night while Jones dished out 43 assists to go along with 11 digs and three blocks.
Sophomore Carlin Salmon, Kadija Fornah and freshman Andrea Beck all recorded 12 kills in the match. Beck also hit a solid .381 and had a team-best six blocks as Salmon chipped in with five blocks.
Junior libero Megan Thornberry led Wake with 21 digs on the night while senior Abby Miller collected 15 digs and notched two service aces.
As a team, the Deacs had a total of 12 blocks in the match, tying Virginia, but the Cavaliers led in just about every other stat. UVa had 62 kills compared to 48 for the Deacons and would record 81 digs on the night while Wake managed 75.
The Cavaliers came out of the gate hot, as they stormed to a 19-9 lead in the first set thanks to some hot hitting. The Hoos hit .342 in the opening frame with 15 kills and would cruise to a 25-16 victory.
The second set started out much closer as the teams found them tied at 12-12 midway through. With the score 15-14 in favor of the Deacs, kills by Fornah and Beck would spark a 5-2 Deacon run that gave them a 20-16 lead. UVa would close to within three at 22-19 but two more kills from Fornah and Beck would help Wake close out the set 25-21.
The third set was much like the second as neither team could take much of a lead. Virginia held a pair of three-point leads midway through but the Deacons would battle-back to tie the score at 20-20. The teams then traded sideouts until with the score knotted at 24-24, a pair of Deacon errors gave Virginia an emotional 26-24 victory.
UVa then rode that momentum into the fourth as it raced out to a 15-8 lead. Wake wasn't going quietly as a pair of kills from Beck cut the lead to three at 17-14 and 18-15 but the Cavaliers finished the set on a 7-2 run to close out the match 25-17. Virginia hit a solid .361 with 16 kills in the fourth set.
The two teams have now split the season series each of the last two seasons with the home team winning each match by a score of 3-1.
Wake will continue its road trip Saturday evening in Blacksburg, Va., with a 5 pm match against Virginia Tech.
