Volleyball Closes Season With 3-1 Loss At Duke

DURHAM, NC - Wake Forest sophomore Carlin Salmon recorded a career-high eight blocks but Duke broke a 1-1 tie with a 25-23 victory in third set third and went on to a 3-1 victory Tuesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

With the win, Duke completes the regular season with a 27-5 record overall and was second in the ACC with a 17-3 mark. Wake finishes the season 11-20 and 9-11 in the conference.

Duke's Rachel Moss recorded her 13th double-double of the season with a match-high 21 kills and 13 digs. Becci Burling joined her in double-figure kills with 11 and also added five blocks. Setter Kelly Catanach was one dig shy of her own double-double with 48 assists, nine digs and four blocks.

Salmon posted eight block assists on the night, besting her previous career-high of seven. She also led the team with 12 kills and hit a solid .304. Junior outside hitter Kristen White recorded her sixth-straight match with double-figure kills, finishing with 11. She also added seven digs and two blocks. Junior Lauren McIntyre, sophomore Kadija Fornah and freshman Andrea Beck each finished the match with nine kills for the Deacs.

Junior setter Kelsey Jones dished out 46 assists to go along with her five blocks, four digs and two service aces. Junior libero Megan Thornberry led the Deacon defenders with a match-high 26 digs while senior Abby Miller finished with 15 digs in the final match of her career.

Duke had a total of 66 kills on evening with a strong .265 hitting percentage. The Blue Devils were holding their opponents to a league-best .156 hitting percentage and tonight, they were right on pace, as Wake hit .157 with 52 kills. Duke also led in digs 83-74 and had 11.5 blocks compared to 9.5 for the Deacs.

With the score tied at 10-10 in the opening set, Wake got a block from Kristen White to spark a 5-0 Deacon-run that saw them take a 15-10 lead. The Blue Devils closed to within two at 15-13 but Wake pushed the lead right back to five at 20-15 after kills from Salmon, Fornah and McIntyre.

The Deacons would then salt away the rest of the set and take a 1-0 lead after a 25-22 victory. Fornah had five kills in the set on no errors while Moss posted five kills for Duke.

The second set started out fairly even as a kill by Burling would spurn Duke on a 6-1 run that saw the hosts open-up a 14-7 lead. The Blue Devils would hold that seven-point edge throughout the rest of the set eventually take a 25-17 victory. Burling and Moss each had four kills in the set for Duke while Salmon and Beck each added three kills for the Deacs. Duke hit a solid .333 in the second with 16 kills and just four errors.

Coming out of the locker room, the Deacons took a 6-2 lead in the third set but back-to-back kills from Megan Hendrickson pulled the hosts even at 12-12. The teams then traded runs and found themselves tied at 19-19 later in the set. Duke would take a 23-22 lead and would eventually win the pivotal set 25-23. The score was tied seven times and the lead changed hands five different times.

Thornberry had eight kills in the set while Moss added five kills and five digs.

Duke used the momentum from the third set and would break a 7-7 tie with an 8-1 run in the fourth take a commanding 15-8 lead. The Deacs would pull to within one at 15-14 but Duke pushed the lead back to six at 21-15 and cruised home to a 25-18 victory.

The Blue Devils swept the season series this season with the Deacs and have won 13 of the last 14 meetings.
