
Gamecocks Top Deacons 62-52

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - South Carolina held off a late-game rally by the Wake Forest women's basketball team and defeated the Demon Deacons 62-52 at Colonial Life Arena on Thursday night.
With the loss Wake Forest now stands at 7-3 and South Carolina improves to 6-3.
USC's La'Keisha Sutton had the game-high 18 points and Secily Ray led the Deacons with 16. Kelsey Bone led all players on the boards with 13 rebounds and Ray had the Wake Forest team-high of nine.
South Carolina held the Deacons to a season-low 29 percent shooting from the floor and held leading scorers Sandra Garcia and Brittany Waters to just two points a piece.
Camille Collier banked four 3-point baskets and was the only other Demon Deacon to score in double-digits (12 points).
The Gamecocks shot 44 percent from the floor, picking up 21 points off Wake Forest turnovers.
Wake Forest held its only lead of the game at the 16:51 mark as Brooke Thomas added a layup to give the Deacons a 6-4 advantage. Kelsey Bone countered with a 3-pointer at 16:35, sparking an 18-5 run that gave the Gamecocks a double-digit lead at 9:39.
The Deacons faced 8-point deficit at halftime but the Gamecocks doubled their lead by starting 8-0 with five points added by Sutton.
At 16:01 another Sutton layup gave the South Carolina its largest lead of the game, a 16-point advantage (43-27).
Wake Forest began to chip away and two free throws from Mykala Walker shrunk the USC lead to 50-44 at 5:01. Wake Forest was unable to gain an edge in the final minutes and stalled out with a final score of 62-52.
Wake Forest will have one more home game before the New Year. The Deacons will host Wofford on Saturday, December 19 at 2 p.m.
