As the decade comes to a close later this month, WakeForestSports.com will look back on the past 10 years in Demon Deacon athletics. Today, the focus is on the decade that was in women's soccer.
10. 2002 - Deacs Open Season with Nine Straight Wins
Wake Forest opened the 2002 season with nine consecutive wins, marking the best start to a season in school history. The Demon Deacons saw their ranking rise to as high as No. 6 after starting the season 9-0-1. Wake finished the season with a 13-7-1 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. A.B. Robbins, Kate Winstead and Sarah Kozey each earned All-ACC accolades.
9. July 10, 2002 - Noftsinger Signs with Washington Freedom
Sarah Kate Noftsinger became the first Wake Forest female athlete drafted to play professionally when she signed with the Washington Freedom of the WUSA on July 10. Other Demon Deacons who played professionally include Erin Regan of the Washington Freedom and Stacy Roeck of the Carolina Courage. Noftsinger and Regan helped the Freedom to the WUSA Championship in 2003.
8. October 15, 2009 - Tony da Luz Earns 200th Win of Coaching Career
Wake Forest women's soccer head coach Tony da Luz earned the 200th win of his coaching career in the Deacs' 2-0 win against NC State. Allie Sadow scored a pair of goals to lead Wake Forest to the win. Da Luz, who completed his 18th year of coaching in 2009, has a career record of 205-137-24. His record at Wake Forest stands at 160-96-21 through 13 seasons.
7. May, 2009 - Women's Soccer Earns Dean's Cup for Third Time in Four Years
Not only does the Wake Forest women's soccer team pride itself on excellence on the playing field, but also in the classroom. No where is this more evident than in the Dean's Cup, which the team has won three of the last four seasons. The Dean's Cup recognizes the top male and female team cumulative grade point averages at Wake Forest. The women's soccer team won the award in 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2008-09. Kate Winstead, Sarah Kozey and Camelyn Dillon each earned Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate scholarships from the ACC during the last 10 years as well.
6. November-December, 2008 - Fountain Member of U.S. U-20 WNT at U-20 World Cup
Kaley Fountain was a member of the victorious United States Under-20 Women's National Team at the FIFA U-20 World Cup held in Chile during November and December of 2008. The U.S. defeated North Korea 2-1 to claim the title. Fountain earned a start and played the entire 90 minutes against China in the final match of the group stage. Fountain also saw time in a 3-0 U.S. win against England in the quarterfinals.
5. 2000-2009 - Wake Forest Extends NCAA Tournament Streak
Wake Forest reached the NCAA Tournament each year during the past decade. The Deacs extended their streak of consecutive NCAA Tournaments to 14 straight. The streak is currently the sixth longest in women's soccer.
4. August 14, 2002 - Roeck, Taggert Named to ACC's 50th Anniversary Women's Soccer Team
Wake Forest placed two players on the ACC's 50th Anniversary Women's Soccer Team as Stacey Roeck and Emily Taggert were selected to the squad. Roeck was a three-time All-ACC selection at Wake Forest, scoring 26 goals and seven assists in 83 career games, including 80 starts. Taggert is the only four-time All-ACC selection in program history. The 1998 ACC Rookie of the Year scored 29 career goals, including three hat tricks in her career.
3. October 27, 2000 - Deacs Upset No. 5 North Carolina
Wake Forest claimed its first win over North Carolina with a 1-0 victory in front of a capacity crowd at Spry Stadium. Stacy Roeck scored the only goal of the match on a penalty kick in the 59th minute. Roeck's goal was the first goal for Wake Forest against UNC. The Tar Heels attempted 14 shots on goal in the match, but goalkeeper Tracy Chao was up to the challenge each time, making 14 saves. Chao was a reserve defender for the Deacs in 1999, but moved to the goalkeeper position after Wake lost both of its goalkeepers to season-ending injuries before the season started.
2. 2009 - Fountain, Hutchinson Rewrite Record Books
Senior forwards Kaley Fountain and Jill Hutchinson provided a dynamic attack for the Demon Deacons in 2009 and rewrote the school's record books. The duo tied for the team lead with 32 points, also tying the school record for points in a single season. Hutchinson, who was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Season, set a new school record with 14 goals on the season, while also becoming the school's all-time leading goal scorer with 36 career goals. Fountain added 11 goals and 10 assists in 2009 and was one of just 13 players nationwide to finish the season with double digit totals in goals and assists. Fountain was named an All-American by the NSCAA and Soccer America.
1. November 20, 2009 - Wake Forest Advances to NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals
The Wake Forest women's soccer team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history with a dramatic 1-0 win at South Carolina. With less than 10 seconds left and the game scoreless, Jill Hutchinson sent a corner kick into the six-yard box. Bess Harrington got a head on the ball and scored the game-winning goal in the final second of regulation. The Deacs fell 5-2 to eventual national champion North Carolina in the quarterfinals. Wake finished the 2009 season with a 16-6-2 record, tying the school record for number of wins in a season.
