Wake Forest falls to 8-4 for the season with the loss and San Diego State improves to 7-4.
Wake Forest will next face the losing team of the Auburn vs. Valparaiso match up. The consolation game will be on Wednesday, December 30 at 5 p.m. PT at Viejas Arena.
Secily Ray and San Diego State's Quenese Davis each scored the game-high 24 points and three players recorded eight rebounds, including Wake Forest's Brittany Waters.
The Demon Deacons shot a season low 6.3 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (1-for-16) and 38 percent (26-for-68) from the field. The Aztecs had the shooting efficiency advantage, shooting 51 percent (23-for-45).
Wake Forest led through the first half and had a six point lead at halftime (36-30). Jene Morris gave the Aztecs their first advantage of the second half at the sixteen minute mark, hitting a 3-point basket to set the score at 39-38.
With two minutes to play San Diego State held a seven point lead, the team's largest edge of the game.
Mike Petersen called a timeout with 38 seconds to play as the Aztecs clung to a 63-60 advantage.
Wake Forest had the inbounds coming out of the timeout but Brittany Waters botched a three-pointer. The Aztecs picked up the rebound but Secily Ray got a steal as San Diego State crossed the half court line. Quenese Davis fouled Brooke Thomas on a three point attempt and Thomas made two of three at the line to set the score at 63-62 with five seconds to play.
Ray made a dive for the ball as Jene Morris missed a layup but the clock expired and Wake Forest ran out of time to catch the Aztecs.
