WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - A trio of Wake Forest players received NSCAA honors as Kaley Fountain was named a third team All-American, while Caitlin Farrell, Fountain and Jill Hutchinson each earned All-Southeast region accolades.
Along with her third team All-American honors, Fountain was also named to the All-Southeast first team. Hutchinson was on the All-Southeast second team, while Farrell was named to the All-Southeast third team.
Hutchinson earned All-Southeast honors for the second time in her career, while Farrell and Fountain were named to the All-Southeast region team for the first time in their careers.
Fountain, a senior forward from Austin, Texas, was one of the best attacking players in the ACC during her senior season, scoring 11 goals and a team-leading 10 assists. She was one of just 13 players in the country to finish the season with double-digit totals in goals and assists. The 2009 All-ACC first team selection tied the Wake Forest single season record with 32 points in 2009 and finished her career with 16 goals and 23 assists.
Farrell was a member of the Wake Forest defense that set a new standard of excellence in 2009. The senior defender from Ft. Myers, Fla., helped the team to 15 shutouts on the season, a new single season school record. On the offensive end, Farrell also added a goal and an assist. Farrell played in 90 games during her collegiate career, including 82 starts. She ranks second in school history in games played and tied for fourth in games started.
A senior forward, Hutchinson set a new Wake Forest single-season record with 14 goals in 2009 and also tied the school's single-season record with 32 points in her senior season. The Wayne, Pa., native ranked in the top five in the ACC in both goals scored and assists. Hutchinson leaves Wake Forest as the school's all-time leading goal scorer with 36 goals and tied for the school record with 85 points.
Deacs Finish Season with No. 8 National Ranking: Wake Forest finished the season checking in at No. 8 in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll of 2009. The ranking is the highest season-ending mark for the program in school history.
The Demon Deacons closed the season with a 16-6-2 record, tying the school record for number of victories in a season. Wake advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
Wake Forest was ranked in the top 15 of the country for most of the 2009 season and rose to as high as No. 5 in the national polls after winning four straight games in ACC play, including a 3-0 win over then-No. 5 Florida State.
