RALEIGH, N.C. - Alex Tchangoue netted her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds but it wasn't enough to push the Wake Forest women's basketball team to victory and the Demon Deacons fell 59-51 at NC State on Thursday evening. Wake Forest is now 17-6 and 4-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and NC State is 10-14 and 2-7.
Tchangoue led the Deacons in scoring and rebounding and NC State's Shayla Fields led the Wolfpack with 22 points and Lucy Ellison added the team-high 14 rebounds.
Wake Forest played without starting forward Corinne Groves, who sat out the game due to illness. The Deacons struggled to replace the offensive boost provided by Groves, who netted 32 points in the last contest, and shot a dismal 28 percent from the floor.
Wake Forest played extremely timidly through the opening minutes. The Wolfpack held a 9-0 advantage five minutes into play as the Deacons adjusted to the changes in the starting lineup. Alex Tchangoue snapped the NC State run with a 3 point basket at 14:56 and the Deacs began to climb into the game from there.
Camille Collier netted a trey just under the 11 minute mark to push Wake Forest in front for the first time at 12-11. The Demon Deacons held on to the lead for the remainder of the half, going into intermission with a 32-21 lead following a buzzer beater layup from Secily Ray.
The Wolfpack chipped away at the lead through the opening minutes of the second half, tying the deacons at 34 all at the 16:10 mark.
The teams tied for a third and final time at 42 all with 6:04 to play. The Wolfpack went on a 8-0 run to break the knotted score and Wake Forest was not able to dig out of the hole.
Next up for Wake Forest is a home contest with Virginia Tech on Sunday, February 15. Tip-off is 3 p.m. and fans that wear pink to the game will receive free admission.
