WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Four Demon Deacon players scored in double figures to propel the Wake Forest women's basketball team to a 66-44 victory over Virginia Tech on Sunday in Winston-Salem. Wake Forest is now 18-6 overall and 5-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia Tech is 11-15, 1-10.
Demon Deacon Camille Collier led scoring efforts for both teams with 20 points and Alex Tchangoue was the top rebounder with 14 caroms. Utahya Drye led Virginia Tech with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Wake Forest took the win without the team's second leading scorer, Corinne Groves, who sat out her second consecutive game with an illness.
WFU redshirt junior Sarah Riddle netted a career-high 10 points through a career-high 23 minutes in her third career start. Brittany Waters also added 11 points to the WFU total and Alex Tchangoue added 10, picking up her seventh double-double of the season.
The Deacons made a 180 degree turnaround from their poor shooting efforts in Thursday's 58-51 loss at NC State. After shooting just 28 percent from floor vs. the Wolfpack, Wake Forest shot 40 percent on Sunday and 47 percent from beyond the arc.
The Deacons posted the victory in front of 1,632 fans who turned out for the Pink Zone promotion which featured fundraising for the WBCA Kay Yow foundation. It was the second largest home attendance of the season and largest home attendance in ACC play.
Wake Forest is now one of four league teams with five ACC wins. Virginia, Georgia Tech and Boston College all join the Deacons in the middle of the conference standings.
Virginia Tech opened scoring in the contest with a jumper from Utahya Drye, but Sarah Riddle countered with a layup to knot the score at 2-2. Courteney Morris followed with a 3-point basket and Wake Forest did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game. The Deacons held a 29-15 advantage at halftime and finished with a 66-44 win.
Wake Forest will now have just one day to prepare to face NC State for the second time in less than a week. The Deacons will host the Wolfpack on Tuesday, February 17, at 7 p.m.
