WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Graduate student Natalie Mullikin has been named the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year by the ACC office. Mullikin also earned Academic All-ACC honor for the fourth-straight year.
Sophomore Kristen White joined Mullikin on the Academic All-ACC team as she earned the distinction for the first time in her career.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
Mullikin had a stellar 2008 campaign and will go down as one of the best to wear the black and gold. She earned first team All-ACC honors for the second straight season after earning second team accolades as a sophomore in 2006. She is also just the third Demon Deacon to earn AVCA honorable mention All-America honors as she was named to the team in 2008.
This season, Mullikin topped the squad with 395 kills for an average of 3.41 per set and had a solid .316 hitting percentage. She also led the team with 123 total blocks including 25 block solos and 98 block assists. Mullikin finishes her career as the school's all-time leading blocker, holding the school record for career block solos (124), career block assists (397) career total blocks (521) and career blocks per set (1.17). She also finished third all-time for career kills with 1,423.
White also had a very solid 2008 season as she was third on the team in kills with 238 and second behind Mullikin with 2.48 kills per set. She also had a good season at the serving line, notching a team best 20 service aces.
White recorded 35 kills in the Deacs' three victories at the Appalachian State Invitational en route to the team title and then notched another 43 kills in the next three matches to kick start Wake's ACC season.
The duo helped Wake to a 19-13 overall record this season, which was the most wins since 2003 and a 14-3 mark at home, which is the best home record in school history.
