WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team defeated Maryland 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. Wake Forest is now 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland fell to 3-11 and 0-4.
Sasha Kulikova and Sierra Poske roared ahead to an 8-2 victory at No. 1 to open doubles play, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before the Terrapins won their first game. But the matches at 2 and 3 would come down to the wire.
Christian Tara and Katarina Reveche fought back from a 5-2 deficit to tie the match at 7-all at No. 3. Maryland's Jordan Hansbrough and Eleanor Peters then powered through to take a 9-7 win to even the doubles matches.
The point was determined at No. 2, where Aileen Davis and Emilee Malvehy faced Maryland's Maggie MacKeever and Karin Lundmark. Though the Deacons led throughout the match, the Terrapins came alive at the end and challenged Malvehy and Davis in a tiebreaker. Wake Forest took the breaker win 7-3 to put Wake Forest ahead 1-0 heading into singles.
Christian Tara and Emilee Malvehy finished quickly in singles play to put WFU up 3-0. Sasha Kulikova clinched the win with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 over Eleanor Peters at No. 1.
Wake Forest will continue play at Leighton Stadium on Sunday, hosting Boston College at 12 p.m.
