Deacons Upend Hokies to Advance in ACC Tournament

CARY, N.C. - After falling 5-2 to Virginia Tech to end the regular season just four days earlier, the ninth-seeded Wake Forest women's tennis team downed the eighth-seeded Hokies 4-1 to advance to the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament quarterfinals. Wake Forest (13-11) took the doubles point with a 2-0 margin. Aileen Davis and Emilee Malvehy quickly moved through the proset on the second court, posting an 8-2 victory over Inga Beerman and Martha Blakely. At No. 1 doubles Sasha Kulikova and Sierra Poske clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Jessica Brouwer and Holly Johnson.
Sasha Kulikova played Inga Beerman at No. 1 singles. Kulikova opened with a 6-4 win but a recurring injury was aggravated during the second set and Kulikova fell 6-1. In the final set Inga Beerman jumped out to an early lead and Kulikova, lacking a fair amount of mobility, fell 6-0 to set the overall score at 1-1.
Christian Tara topped Yasmin Hamza 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 to push Wake Forest in front of Virginia Tech 2-1. Tara had fallen 6-3, 6-4 to Hamza in the teams' previous meeting.
Emilee Malvehy finished play just moments later on Court 3. In a grinding match with extra long points Malvehy pulled out a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Martha Blakeley. Like Tara, Malvehy had also lost to her Hokie competitor earlier in the week.
Senior Sierra Poske clinched the win with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 2. Poske jumped out to early leads in both sets, even holding a 4-1 advantage in the second set before Jessica Brouwer came back to tie and challenge Poske in a tiebreaker.
