Deacons Open NCAA Tourney with Gamecocks

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team will begin play in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, May 9, when it battles South Carolina at the University of Tennessee. The match will begin and 9 a.m. and live stats will be available at Tennessee's Tournament Central.

The all-time series between Wake Forest and South Carolina is nearly even, with USC holding a slight 10-9 advantage since their first meeting in 1978. In their last meeting, Wake Forest defeated the Gamecocks 4-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament during the 2006 postseason.

This season the Gamecocks are 14-10 and are led by senior Gira Schofield who earned her fourth consecutive bid the NCAA singles championships at the end of April. USC is the two-seed for the site and Wake Forest (13-12) is the three-seed.

Host team Tennessee opens play on Saturday with 4-seed ETSU at 12 p.m. The winners of both first round matches will play each other on Sunday, May 10 at 1 p.m .
