WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team scored three first period goals and cruised to a 4-0 victory over Campbell in an exhibition match on Saturday night at Spry Stadium.
"We got some things accomplished that we wanted to," head coach Tony da Luz said. "I felt like we passed the ball pretty well. We would have liked to see more quality crosses and finishing, but overall I thought it was a pretty good start."
The game was played in three 30 minute periods, instead of the usual two 45 minute period format.
The Demon Deacons put the game out of reach early, putting three goals on the scoreboard in the first 20 minutes. Jordan Feger scored the game winner in the seventh minute, while 2008 leading goal scorer Jill Hutchinson scored in the 13th minute. An own goal by Campbell in the 20th minute was the third goal of the game for Wake Forest.
"We had a great start to the game," da Luz added. "The problem is when you score the early goals, psychologically you tend to let down a little bit. That's why we put in a new team in the second period. They had the ball a lot but weren't able to create many opportunities."
Senior Kaley Fountain added a goal in the third period to close out the scoring for Wake Forest.
Wake Forest controlled the stat sheet, out shooting Campbell 17-0 and taking all six corners in the game.
The Deacs used both goalies in the game. Senior Laura Morse played the first 75 minutes, while Amanda Barasha played the final 15 minutes to combine for the shutout.
Anna DiTommaso played the entire 90 minutes for Campbell and allowed four goals, while also making one save.
Several members of the team were able to see action in the game as a total of 23 Deacs played in the match.
Wake Forest got on the board in the seventh minute. A cross was cleared out by a Campbell defender, but came right to the feet of Feger. Feger's shot from the top of the 18 found the right side of the net to give the Deacs a 1-0 lead.
The Demon Deacons would double the lead in the 13th minute. Allie Sadow played a beautiful pass to Hutchinson, whose shot from six yards away was chipped over the keeper and into the net.
An own goal in the 20th minute made the score 3-0. A Campbell defender mishandled the ball inside the six-yard box and it trickled over the goal line for the third Demon Deacon goal of the night.
After a quiet second period, Wake Forest totaled 10 shots in the final period and also scored its fourth goal of the game. Fountain recovered a deflected cross right outside the goal line and knocked it into the net.
Wake Forest opens the regular season portion of its schedule on Friday, August 21, at home against High Point. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
