GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Sophomore Kadija Fornah has been named to the Preseason All-ACC Volleyball team as announced by the ACC Office on Tuesday. Wake Forest was also predicted to finish ninth in voting conducted by the league's 12 head coaches.
Fornah is just the third Demon Deacon to earn Preseason All-ACC honors since the conference started voting on a preseason team in 2004. Valerie Rydberg was on the first team in 2004 and Natalie Mullikin earned the distinction from 2006-08.
As a freshman in 2008, Fornah saw action in all 32 matches and finished second on the team with 264 kills. She averaged 2.34 kills per set and also finished with a total of 98 digs and 41 blocks. Fornah became the second-straight Demon Deacon to earn All-Freshman Team honors, joining Kelsey Jones who was named to the team in 2007.
Fornah should be one of the Demon Deacons' keys this season as she joins a healthy Kristen White on the outside.
As a team, Wake received a total of 47 votes and was predicted to finish ninth in the 12-team ACC. Duke takes in 116 of a possible 121 points, including seven of 12 first place votes, to earn the top spot.
Just 17 points separate the top-four teams as Florida State, Miami, and North Carolina also take in first-place votes. Florida State follows Duke in second place with 104 points and three first-place votes, while Miami is tabbed to finish in third with 101 points and one first-place vote. North Carolina lands in fourth with 99 points and one first-place vote.
Clemson is tabbed fifth with 75 points, and is followed by Virginia Tech (71) in sixth, Virginia (62) in seventh and Georgia Tech (49) in eighth.
Maryland received 33 votes and is behind Wake in tenth and NC State (21), and Boston College (14) round out the group in 11th and 12th.
Last year, Wake was predicted to finish 10th in the conference and wound-up finishing eighth with a 19-13 mark overall and 10-10 in the conference. The 10 wins were tied for the most conference wins in school-history.
The Demon Deacons will open the season by hosting the Deacon Invitational on Aug. 28-29. Wake will play Charlotte on Friday, Aug. 28, at 7 pm and will take on Jacksonville State and Furman on Saturday.
