WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior forward Kaley Fountain continued her hot start to the 2009 season with two goals and an assist, while fellow senior forward Jill Hutchinson also scored two goals to lead Wake Forest (3-0-0, 0-0-0 ACC) to a 5-0 win against UNC-Wilmington (0-1-0, 0-0-0 CAA) on Wednesday night at Spry Stadium.
The Demon Deacon offense continued its stellar start to the season, adding five goals and attempting 23 shots. Through three games, Wake Forest leads the ACC with 12 goals and 73 shots attempted.
A big part of the offensive story has been Fountain, who now has scored a team-best five goals on the season, scoring at least one goal in each of the first three games of the season. The Austin, Texas, native also notched her first assist of the season on Wednesday night.
After being shut out in the season opener, Hutchinson has also increased her offensive output, scoring three goals in the last two games, including two against the Seahawks.
Sophomore Taylor Norman closed out the scoring for the Deacs with her first collegiate goal late in the second half.
Five different players recorded assists in the game for Wake Forest, including senior Allie Sadow with two. Caitlin Farrell, Fountain, Laura Morse and Marisa Park each had one assist.
Morse earned her first shutout of the season in goal, making four stops in the game. With the win, she improved to 3-0-0 on the season. Caitlin Hunter suffered the loss in net for UNCW, allowing two goals and making four saves.
Wake Forest out-shot UNC-Wilmington 23-6, including a 12-4 edge in shots on goal. The Deacs attempted six corner kicks, compared to three for the Seahawks.
The Demon Deacons wasted little time in scoring, striking first in the 10th minute. Fountain played a cross from the left side of the field to Hutchinson in front of the goal. Hutchinson's shot from near range found the left side of the net to put the Deacs in front 1-0.
Wake Forest doubled the lead just over two minutes later. Farrell played a long pass from near midfield that Fountain found just inside the 18. Fountain's side volley beat the charging UNC-Wilmington keeper and rolled into the net.
UNC-Wilmington had its first scoring chance of the game in the 15th minute. Off a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box on the left side of the field, Kelly Dodd attempted a sliding shot from the right post that went just wide of the goal.
Fountain scored her second goal in the 59th minute, when she ran under the clearance from Morse and was one-on-one with the keeper. Fountain's shot from 12 yards out easily got past the goalkeeper to make the score 3-0.
The Seahawks nearly got their first goal in the 73rd minute on another close shot by Dodd. Erica Rodgers played a nice ball into the box. Morse rushed out to try to stop a potential shot, but before she could get to the ball, Dodd was able to flick the ball past her, but the ball went just left of the goal to keep the shutout intact.
Hutchinson found the back of the net for the second time in the game in the 83rd minute. Park played a cross that found Hutchinson with an open shot from 12 yards out. Hutchinson left no doubt, sending the ball into the goal for a 4-0 Demon Deacon lead.
Norman closed the scoring in the 89th minute. Sadow's cross from the right side of the end line found Norman near the six-yard box. Norman's rocket found the upper right hand side of the net for the final goal of the evening.
Wake Forest returns to action on Sunday, hosting Loyola (Md.) at 1 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
