WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest used the momentum it built from its first win earlier in the day to roll past Liberty in three sets to cap-off a successful Black & Gold Challenge Saturday evening.
The Deacons (2-10) won for the second time today in three sets, sweeping the Flames 25-21, 25-22, 25-21. With the loss, Liberty falls to 5-7 on the season.
Junior Kristen White recorded her first double-double of the year to lead the Deacs as she posted 10 kills and 11 digs.
White was one of a number of Deacons who had a good night in the back row. Wake passed the ball well all night which kept the offense in rhythm. Senior Abby Miller led the team with 20 digs while fellow senior Sally Fischer collected 11. Junior setter Kelsey Jones also picked-up seven digs and dished out 37 assists.
Miller finished the weekend with a team-best 51 digs for an average of 5.67 digs per set. Jones had a total of 87 assists, 19 digs and seven kills in the three matches. For their efforts, both players were named to the All-Tournament Team. This is the second-straight year earning Black & Gold Challenge honors for Jones as she was named the tournament's MVP last season.
Sophomore Kadija Fornah continued her solid weekend against Liberty, finishing with a match-high 13 kills. She also added five digs and had one of the two Demon Deacon service aces on the night. Fornah finished the weekend with 31 kills, an impressive .319 hitting percentage and 23 digs.
Freshman Andrea Beck added three more blocks in the match tonight to go along with eight kills. She averaged 1.56 blocks per set over the three matches this weekend and finished with a total of 14 blocks.
Middle blocker Carlin Salmon hit a solid .364 with seven kills and one block against Liberty.
As a team, the Deacons hit .261 on the evening, narrowly missing their season-high of .262, which they reached in a 3-0 sweep of Appalachian State earlier on Saturday.
Liberty was led by outside hitter Nicki Scripko's double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. She also added a pair of blocks. Hannah Anderson chipped in with 10 kills and middle blocker Chelaine McCarty notched eight kills, two blocks and hit a solid .412. McCarty was the Flames' lone member on the All-Tournament Team.
The Deacs held Liberty to a .153 hitting percentage on the night and out-dug the flames 59-53.
Liberty jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the first set but the Deacs chipped away and got to within one at 8-7 thanks to kills from Fornah and Beck. The teams then traded sideouts for the next 14 points until a pair of kills from Fornah allowed the Deacons to pull even at 17-17.
With the score tied at 19-19, Wake got three-straight kills from junior Lauren McIntyre, White and Beck to take a 22-19 lead and after a kill from Anderson and another kill from McIntyre, the Deacs would lead 23-21.
After a WFU timeout, Liberty gave the Deacs set-point with a service error and a kill from Jones would end the set, 25-21, in favor of the Deacs. Fornah had six kills on just one error for a .445 hitting percentage in opening frame and Miller collected a total of 13 digs. As a team, Wake hit a solid .368 in the first set.
The Deacons used the momentum from the first set to build an early 7-3 lead in the second set thanks to kills from Fornah, Salmon, Jones and Beck. The Flames would then answer with a 10-4 run of their own to take a 12-11 lead.
Again, both sides would trade sideouts and with the score 19-18 in favor of Liberty, a kill from White sparked a 6-1 Demon Deacon run to give Wake a 24-20 advantage. Salmon had a kill during the run and she also teamed with Jones for a huge block.
After a pair of Liberty points, Salmon would close the set with her fifth kill of the night to give the Deacs at 25-22 victory. Fornah had another solid set, hitting .333 with four kills and two digs.
The break seemed to be exactly what Liberty needed as the Flames roared out of the locker room on a 10-3 run thanks to a total of six kills and a service ace. Wake would then counter with a 9-3 run of its own to cut the lead to one at 13-12.
Back-to-back kills from White and Fornah would even the score at 14-14 and with the score tied at 16-16, a service ace by Jones, a kill from McIntyre and a stonewall block from McIntyre and Beck, would give the Deacons a 19-16 lead as well at the momentum.
Liberty would score five of the next nine points after a timeout to climb to within two at 23-21 but kills from White and Fornah would end the set and the match, 25-21, in favor of the Deacs. White had a total of five kills and five digs in the final set. Sophomore Cambrey Oehler also came off the bench to give Wake a spark in the back row as she notched six digs and a kill in the final stanza.
Wake finished the tournament in second place behind ACC-rival Duke, who finished with a perfect 3-0 mark. The Blue Devils escaped with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Liberty in the first match of the day and then hung-on for a 3-1 victory over Appalachian State this afternoon.
