BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Wake Forest senior defender Sarah Winslow's goal in the 85th minute broke a scoreless tie as the eighth-ranked Demon Deacons defeated UAB 1-0 on Saturday night at Rathmell Sports Park.
With the win, Wake Forest closes non-conference play with an 8-1-0 record. UAB drops to 6-2-0 with the loss.
The game was moved from UAB's home field due to unplayable field conditions after a large amount of rainfall had fallen over the past week. The start time of the game was moved back 30 minutes and the match was moved to Rathmell Sports Park.
With the game scoreless late in the game, the Demon Deacons broke the tie with Winslow's first goal of the season. Ally Berry passed the ball to Winslow, who fired a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net to put the Demon Deacons in front 1-0.
UAB was only able to get one corner kick in the final five minutes as the Deacs held on for the 1-0 win.
Wake Forest held a 16-13 advantage in shots, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. The Demon Deacons attempted seven corner kicks, compared to two for the Blazers.
Kaley Fountain attempted a team-high five shots for Wake Forest, while Berry and Winslow each had three shots.
Emily Sinovich had three shots, including two shots on goal, to lead UAB offensively.
Laura Morse earned her third shutout of the season, making three saves. With the shutout, Morse now has 17 clean sheets in her career and is one shutout away from tying the school record.
Kate Blankenship suffered the loss in net for UAB, making seven saves and allowing one goal.
Wake Forest had the first shot on goal in the game as Bianca D'Agostino had a look in the 19th minute but her shot was saved by the UAB keeper.
The Blazers came right back with a shot in goal in the 27th minute on an attempt from Sinovich, but Morse was able to make the stop.
UAB nearly grabbed the lead 33 minutes into the game, but Sinovich's shot was cleared off the goal line by a Wake Forest defender to keep the game scoreless.
Fountain had a chance to put the Demon Deacons on top in the 63rd minute but Blankenship was able to make the save.
Winslow just missed a goal in the 77th minute, hitting the post to keep the game tied at zero.
Wake Forest continued to apply the pressure offensively as Jordan Feger and Berry each had shots on goal, but Blankenship was able to make the stop on both attempts.
Wake Forest returns to action on Sunday, September 27, opening conference play at top-ranked North Carolina. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. (ET) and the game will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel.
