LEXINGTON, Ky. - Wake Forest senior forward Allie Sadow scored her first goal of the season, while the Demon Deacon defense held Kentucky to just four shots as Wake claimed a 1-0 win on Friday afternoon at the UK Soccer Complex.
"It's a great result for us," head coach Tony da Luz said. "It's a tough road game after a late night and a long drive. (Head coach) Jon (Lipsitz) has Kentucky believing and they were very organized and tough to break down."
With the win, Wake Forest improves to 5-0-0 on the season, the team's best start to a season since the 2002 season. Kentucky drops to 2-1-0 with the defeat.
Neither team was able to generate many quality scoring opportunities as Wake Forest only had six shots, while Kentucky took just four.
"We've set a challenge to not give up any goals, particularly off set pieces, this weekend," da Luz said. "We did a really good job of defending and keeping our shape. Kentucky didn't really have any counter attacks."
Sadow scored the only goal of the game in the 24th minute, finishing off a nice cross from Sarah Winslow, for her first goal of the season.
"It was a great cross from Winslow and Allie redirected into the side netting," da Luz added. "I'm really happy for her. Hopefully that will get her past the barrier of getting the first goal of the season. We had a lot of the game and I thought we passed the ball around pretty well. It was very difficult to break them down because they had so many players back.
Laura Morse and Amanda Barasha combined for the shutout, with each keeper playing 45 minutes, while not being forced to make a save. Morse earned the win to improve to 5-0-0 on the year.
Sydney Hiance suffered the loss for Kentucky, allowing a goal and making one save.
Kentucky had the first scoring chance in the second minute. Jenna Goblirsch's free kick from 35 yards out was headed by Laura Novikoff from 12 yards out, but her shot went high.
Wake Forest had its first shot with just more than 27 minutes remaining in the first half. Bianca D'Agostino played a ball from the top of the box that found Sadow on the left side of the 18. Her shot sailed high of the goal.
The Demon Deacons struck first with 21:53 remaining in the first half. Winslow played a cross from the right side of the field that found Sadow making a run down the center of the field. Sadow's shot from inside the six found the back of the net for the first goal of the game.
Kentucky had its best scoring chance in the first half with 6:30 remaining in the half. Katie Fahey crossed the ball from the left side of the field. Morse dove and attempted to stop the ball, but missed. Novikoff had an open look at goal, but her shot was deflected and a foul allowed Wake Forest to clear the ball away from safety.
The Wildcats had the first scoring chance of the second half with 36:30 remaining in the game. Giuleana Lopez's hot from just outside the 18 sailed wide left of the goal.
Wake Forest had a scoring chance with 28 minutes remaining in the game. Sadow played a cross from the right side of the 18, trying to find Hutchinson inside the six-yard box. Hutchinson was not able to get a good touch on the ball as the UK keeper picked the ball up.
The Wake Forest defense did a nice job of limiting Kentucky's chances for the remainder of the half as the Demon Deacons held on for the 1-0 win.
Wake Forest returns to action on Sunday, September 6, playing host to East Carolina. Kickoff at Spry Stadium is set for 1 p.m. (ET).
