WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Secily Ray scored 16 points and Brittany Waters added 14 to lead Wake Forest to a 67-64 win over No. 25 Miami on Sunday at the Joel Coliseum.
Wake (11-7, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) ended a two-game slide, collecting its first win over a ranked team since a 53-46 win over then-No. 10 Texas A&M on Nov. 23, 2007.
Shenise Johnson scored 19 points, Riquna Williams added 17 and Diane Barnes 10 for Miami.
The Hurricanes (13-4, 1-2), ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since Feb. 23, 2004, have lost two straight since beating Florida State 78-71 on Jan. 10.
Wake Forest led 33-16 at halftime, but after leading by as much as 19 points during the second half, Miami clawed its way back with the help of back-to-back 3-pointers from Shenise Johnson at 17:37.
"We are really good when we're the attacking team and that's what we were during first half," head coach Mike Petersen said. "When we start to get passive we get very mediocre and that's what happened in the start of the second half."
Miami went on a 22-3 run to take a 55-52 lead with 5:06 left, but Wake responded with 11 unanswered points.
Wake Forest freshman Asia Williams sealed the win for the Demon Deacons with a gutsy steal in the closing seconds.
Wake Forest will continue play in the Atlantic Coast Conference on January 22, when the team faces NC State in Raleigh at 6:30. The game will be televised on Fox Sports South.
