RALEIGH, N.C. - It was an Atlantic Coast Conference showdown that came down to the very last second, but NC State pulled out a 51-49 win over Wake Forest when Amber White hit a jumper as time expired to break a 49-49 tie and clinch the Wolfpack win.
Wake Forest is now 11-8 and 2-3 in the ACC and NC State is 12-7, 2-2.
Wake Forest sophomore Secily Ray led the Demon Deacons with 20 points, 9 rebounds. Bonae Holston had the team-high mark in scoring for the Wolfpack, putting up 15 points. Nikitta Gartrell had 9 rebounds.
NC State held a narrow 23-21 lead at the half. Ray added 16 of her 20 points in the second half to help the Deacs keep fighting to the final seconds.
With 4:15 to play a pair of Bonae Holston free throws tied the game for the seventh time. Courteney Morris answered with a 3-point basket, and Amber White followed with a layup at 2:33. Ray had a huge block against Lucy Ellison's layup attempt and followed with a driving layup of her own at 1:22 to put the Deacs in front 49-46.
Gartrell hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds to play to tie the game for the eighth and final time.
Wake Forest had possession and Brooke Thomas went up for the layup with 13 seconds to play. She missed, Gartrell picked up the rebound and landed a floater with less than one second remaining.
:"Obviously you are going to be frustrated with this game," head coach Mike Petersen said. "If you aren't frustrated something's wrong. We weren't able to follow through on the game plan down the stretch and NC State played very well down the stretch."
Wake Forest will have a quick turnaround, playing host to Clemson on Sunday at 2 p.m.
