WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team fell 64-54 to Richmond on Monday evening in Winston-Salem.
Richmond's (10-4) Brittani Shells led both teams with 19 points and five rebounds. Brooke Thomas was the leading Demon Deacon (9-5) scorer with 10 points, marking the first time this season and second time in her career she's led the Deacs in points. Secily Ray had the game-high 10 rebounds.
The Deacons shot 44 percent from beyond the 3-point line (8-for-18), the team's best mark since the November 25 game against High Pont.
Foul trouble haunted the Deacons in the second half. Wake Forest picked up 13 personal fouls to Richmond's four, and the Spiders were dead-on from the free throw line, putting up 11-for-12. The Deacons were 4-for-6 from the line.
The Spiders forced 20 Wake Forest turnovers in the first half, but the Deacons were able to knot the score as the halftime buzzer sounded with a three-point shot from Brooke Thomas (24-24).
Thomas hit a jumper at the 17:30 mark in the second half to give Wake Forest a four point lead (31-27), but a couple of free throws and a layup from Crystal Goring tied the game at 33-33 with 15:37 to play.
Richmond out-scored Wake Forest 19-9 in the next five minutes to build a 10 point lead with 10:16 to play.
Secily Ray picked the pocked of Ashley Oliver and Brooke Thomas followed with a layup to cut the Richmond advantage to three points with 8:12 on the clock, but Shells followed with a jumper to push Richmond back to a two-possession lead, which they held for the remainder of regulation.
Wake Forest will begin conference season this Thursday, hosting Virginia Tech at 7 p.m.
