WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman Sandra Garcia's 3-point basket with 23 seconds remaining in the second half pushed the trailing Wake Forest women's basketball team in front of Virginia Tech in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener on Thursday night in Winston-Salem.
Wake Forest improves to 10-5 and 1-0 in the ACC with the win and Virginia Tech stalls at 10-5, 0-1.
Garcia led both teams in scoring with 22 points (7-for-13), including 3-for-5 from beyond the three point line. It was her second highest scoring effort of the season and best outing in 3-point shots.
"As a freshman you've got to get a little rhythm and you've got to get used to what you're doing," Wake Forest head coach Mike Petersen said.
"She's capable. Those are not flukes, those are not accidents. She's also so strong around the rim she's going to pose a lot of match up problems."
Wake Forest freshman Asia Williams was the game's leading rebounder with eight caroms. Utahya Drye had the team-high 15 points and six rebounds for Virginia Tech.
Freshman Lakevia Boykin played a career-high 31 minutes, filling in for point guard Brooke Thomas who got into foul trouble early and fouled out with 12:54 to play.
Wake Forest jumped out to a 12 point lead to start the game, but at the 14:21 mark in the first half Virginia Tech's Shani Grey sparked an 18-4 run and Virginia Tech held a 33-30 advantage going into the locker room.
The game tied three times in the opening of the second half. At 7:14 freshman Mykala Walker landed a 3-pointer to tie the Hokies at 52-52. Virginia Tech then out-scored the Deacons 10-3 to take a seven point lead at 4:19 on the heels of a 3-point basket from Lindsay Biggs.
Sandra Garcia picked up four points from the free throw line to cut the Virginia Tech advantage to 62-59 with 2:32 to play. Utahya Drye added a free throw for the Hokies but Camille Collier countered with a trey and Garcia followed another 3-pointer at the 23 second mark to push Wake Forest in front. Secily Ray added a free throw to set the final score at 66-63.
Wake Forest will continue play in the ACC when it travels to Durham to take on the Blue Devils on Sunday at 1 p.m.
