WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team swept Boston College 25-18, 25-23, 25-14 to claim a conference victory Friday evening in Reynolds Gym.
The Demon Deacons have now reached double-digit wins with a 10-5 record and improve to 3-2 in ACC play. Boston College drops below .500 at 8-9 and remains winless in conference play at 0-4.
Senior Megan Thornberry performed well in the back row for the Deacons, tying a season-high with 21 digs in just three sets. She was also one assist away from tying a career-high with five on the night.
Sophomore Megan Carnell had another solid match from the setter position, dishing out 31 assists and setting career-best marks with two aces and three block assists. She was also an offensive threat on the night, recording four kills on just five attempts.
Junior Kadija Fornah was the only Deac to reach double-figures in kills with 10, and seniors Kristen White and Lauren McIntyre each had seven kills.
Sophomore Andrea Beck led the team with five blocks on the night and contributed six kills on 19 swings.
Wake Forest and Boston College played very close at the beginning of Set 1 with neither team taking more than a three-point lead. A Wake Forest serving error gave BC a 12-11 lead, but an 11-4 run put the Deacs in control for the duration of the set. McIntyre was on fire in Set 1 with six of her seven kills coming in that frame.
The Demon Deacons had a sizable 10-4 lead early in Set 2, but the Eagles chipped away at the lead and eventually pulled within one point at 23-22, prompting a Wake Forest timeout. Carnell and Beck teamed up for a block out of the timeout, and after a Deacon hitting error made the score 24-23, Carnell again came through with a kill after a tight pass to the net by Thornberry.
Much of Set 3 was also back and forth between the two teams, as the Deacs and the Eagles were tied as late as 11-11. Wake Forest then ended the match on a 14-3 run to earn the victory. Fornah and junior Carlin Salmon each had two kills during that run, while White and Beck each had a kill apiece.
Wake Forest will continue its homestand on Wednesday when North Carolina visits Reynolds Gym at 7 p.m. NC State will follow the Tar Heels and travel to Winston-Salem on Friday at 7 p.m.
