BLACKSBURG, Va. - Senior setter Kelsey Jones moved into second place on Wake Forest's all-time assists list, but Virginia Tech defeated the Wake Forest volleyball team 25-21, 25-18, 25-12 on Friday evening at Cassell Coliseum.
The loss drops the Demon Deacons to 11-7 overall and 4-4 in ACC play, while Virginia Tech is now 13-6 overall and 4-5 in the ACC.
Jones dished out 25 assists in the match and now has 3,915 for her career. She passed Erin Borhart for second place, who had 3,893 during her Deacon career.
Junior Carlin Salmon was the closest Deacon to reaching double-figure kills with eight and did so while hitting .375 on the night. Salmon also added four blocks.
Sophomore Andrea Beck had seven kills, senior Kristen White added six kills and senior libero Megan Thornberry led the Deacon defense with 14 digs on the night.
Sets 1 and 2 each began in similar fashion, with one team jumping out to an early lead only for the other team to respond.
Virginia Tech was the team to jump out to an early lead in Set 1, going up 11-3. The Deacons responded, though, and went on a 9-1 run to tie the set at 12-12. After an error at 11-3 to give Wake the serve, Jones recorded an ace that was followed by four consecutive Hokie errors. A kill by VT's Felicia Willoughby stopped the run momentarily, but a block by senior Lauren McIntyre and Salmon, an ace by junior Kadija Fornah and a kill by Salmon allowed Wake to tie the set.
The teams would side out and remain within one point of each other until the Hokies were able to take a 21-19 lead after a kill by Jennifer Wilker. The Deacs kept the lead at just two points until 23-21 when back-to-back kills by Victoria Hamsher and Justine Record ended the set in favor of Virginia Tech.
The Demon Deacons enjoyed the early lead in Set 2 at 7-2 and forced VT to take an early timeout. White, Salmon, Fornah and McIntyre all contributed kills during the run.
Virginia Tech chipped away at the lead and tied the score at 12-12, just like the Deacons had done earlier in Set 1. The Hokies then went on an 11-5 run to put Set 2 out of reach.
After Wake Forest had a 4-1 lead in Set 3, the rest of the frame belonged to the Hokies. Virginia Tech built leads of 12-7, 16-8 and 19-10 en route to the 25-12 set victory.
Record led all players with 12 kills, while Willoughby and Hamsher each had 10.
Wake Forest will have a day off before traveling to play Virginia on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va.
