CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Wake Forest fell on the road to Miami in three sets Sunday afternoon at the James L. Knight Sports Complex.
The Hurricanes improve to 16-6 overall, while the Demon Deacons are now 13-8. Both teams have identical 6-5 records in conference play.
Junior Carlin Salmon and sophomore Andrea Beck led the offensive attack from the middle with 10 and nine kills, respectively. They also led the team in efficiency, as Beck hit .368 for the match and Salmon hit .348 for the match.
Senior setter Kelsey Jones dished out 28 assists, while senior libero Megan Thornberry had a team-high 13 digs.
Miami recorded five total blocks in the match and hit .384 as a team. Wake Forest could not slow down the Hurricane attack and failed to record a block during the match.
Lane Carico led Miami with 11 kills and 13 digs, and Katie Gallagher had 31 assists for the Canes.
Set 1 began a little choppy for both teams, as several errors translated into points on each side. Salmon recorded a kill to tie the set at 5-5, but the Hurricanes went on a 6-1 run to take an 11-6 lead. Salmon again got a kill to stop the run and give Wake its seventh point of the set.
Miami continued to build a lead and forced the Demon Deacons to take their second timeout of the set at 17-10. Salmon got a kill out of the timeout to cut the deficit to six, but the Hurricanes continued to control Set 1 and cruised to a 25-15 win.
Set 2 began better for Wake, as they Deacs got two kills from Salmon and a kill from Beck that helped spark an early 5-3 lead. Miami went on a 11-5 run, though, and took a 14-9 advantage. The Hurricanes again finished the second set strong and won 25-16.
Through two sets, Miami was extremely efficient, hitting .400 overall and .467 in Set 1 alone.
The Demon Deacons again found themselves down early at 8-5 in Set 3. The Hurricanes then took complete control of the set by going on an 8-0 run and taking a 16-5 lead. The Deacs got within eight points on a few occasions, but Miami was too much and finished the match with a 25-14 Set 3 victory.
Wake Forest will return to action on Friday and Saturday at home against Georgia Tech and Clemson. The match against Clemson will be the Deacs' annual Dig for the Cure match.
