ELON, N.C. - Wake Forest junior defender Kyle Adams scored his first goal of the season in the first overtime period to lift the Demon Deacons to a 2-1 win at Elon on Tuesday night at Rudd Field.
With the victory, the Deacs improve to 6-7-2 on the season, while Elon is now 6-5-5.
With the game tied at one in the 94th minute, Wake Forest earned a free kick from the left wing. Ben Newnam played a great service into the box that found the head of Adams, who tucked a shot inside the far post to give the Demon Deacons the win.
The goal for Adams was his first of the season and second of his career. Both career goals for the Fayetteville, Ga., native have been game winners.
Newnam picked up an assist for the second consecutive game, recording his second assist of the season and his first game-winning assist.
Freshman Luca Gimenez also found the back of the net in the win for the Demon Deacons. Gimenez scored his fourth goal of the season in the first half, tying for the team lead. Fellow freshman Kyle Emerson provided his second assist of the season on the goal.
Austen King scored his second goal of the season for Elon in the loss. King's goal was assisted by Brad Franks for his fourth helper of the year.
Wake Forest goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald improved his season record to 6-7-2 with the win. Fitzgerald made five saves and allowed one goal in the contest. Elon keeper Reed Dillard surrendered two goals and made two stops in the loss to fall to 2-3-1.
Elon finished the game with a 19-10 edge in shots, although shots on goal were much tighter, with the Phoenix holding a narrow 6-4 advantage. Elon attempted four corner kicks, while Wake Forest had three corners.
Wake Forest had the better of the play for much of the first half, holding a sizeable shot advantage until the end of the half. The Deacs had three shots in the first 2:13 with the final shot coming off the foot of Andy Lubahn and requiring a save from Dillard.
Lubahn had another shot on goal in the 16th minute, but again Dillard was up to the task, making the save.
Elon had its best look of the first 45 minutes late in the half. A shot from Daniel Lovitz aimed a shot for the center of the goal, but Fitzgerald was able to leap and get a hand on the ball to keep the game scoreless entering the half.
The Deacs broke the scoreless deadlock in the 60th minute on Gimenez's fourth goal of the year. Emerson's corner kick from the right side came to Gimenez at the left side of the six-yard box. Gimenez settled the ball and fired a shot into the upper left netting to put Wake in front.
Elon equalized 15 minutes later with the Phoenix goal also coming on a set piece. Franks' free kick found King inside the penalty area and he headed a shot into the goal to tie the game at one and eventually send the match into overtime.
Wake Forest closes its home schedule on Saturday, hosting Boston College on Senior Night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The 2010 senior class of Russ Coleman and Josh Henke will be honored in a ceremony before the match.
