TULSA, Okla. - Jonathan Wolff won his first singles qualifying match as the Wake Forest men's tennis team opened play at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships hosted by Tulsa.
Monday marked the first day of singles qualifying, the stage where two Demon Deacons began the tournament. Players need to win three matches in qualifying to gain acceptance into the All-American Championships main draw.
81st-ranked Wolff knocked off ETSU's No. 97 Sander Gille 6-3, 6-4 in his first match to reach the second round of qualifying. The senior will take on Stanford's No. 110 Greg Hirshman on Tuesday.
No. 68 Iain Atkinson dropped his hard-fought first round match to Maryland's John Collins 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, and will feed into the qualifying consolation draw.
The draws for the doubles qualifying competition were also released Monday. The Wake Forest team of Atkinson and Wolff, the No. 7 seeds in the qualifying draw, will face a tough test in their opening match as they were drawn against Virginia's Jarmere Jenkins and Alex Domijan in a match set for Tuesday.
Tripper Carleton, the Deacons' third representative at the tournament, was accepted directly into the singles main draw and will not begin play until Thursday.
The D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships is one of three individual national championship events on the collegiate calendar. Live scoring from the tournament is available
