PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Wake Forest women's tennis players Martina Pavelec and Kayla Duncan began qualifying action on a rain-shortened Tuesday at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, hosted by the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
No. 34 Pavelec split a pair of singles matches, winning a three-setter against Pepperdine's Arianna Colffer in the opening round of qualifying before falling to NC State's Sanaa Bhambri, the seventh-ranked freshman in the country, in Round Two.
No. 79 Duncan dropped her first singles match to Virginia's No. 45 Lindsey Hardenbergh, and was down a set in her consolation match against Miami' No. 53 Anna Bartenstein when play was suspended due to rain.
Duncan and Pavelec teamed up in doubles qualifying, dropping their first match to Virginia's 28th-ranked duo of Emily Fraser and Hana Tomljanovic.
Duncan's singles match is scheduled to resume tomorrow, weather permitting, and the Deacon doubles team is slated to take on Memphis' Collins and Mikesz in the consolation draw.
