Deacons to Face Florida State in ACC Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team will make the short trip down I-40 to take on Florida State in the first round of the ACC Women's Soccer Championships. The match is set for 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C and will be broadcast by theACC.com.
The Demon Deacons enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed after finishing the regular season with a record of 11-7-1 (5-4-1 ACC). The Seminoles (13-4-1, 7-2-1 ACC) tied with Maryland and Virginia for second place in the conference, but received the No. 4 seed after losing out on the tiebreakers. The winner of Wednesday's match will take on the winner of the game between top-seeded North Carolina and No. 8 seed Virginia Tech in the semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m.
Wake Forest and Florida State have met in the ACC Championship on four previous occasions, splitting the matches 1-1-2. The two sides played earlier in the season in Tallahassee, Fla., with the Seminoles eking out a 1-0 overtime win. Wake goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe made a career-high nine saves in the contest.
Demon Deacon freshman Katie Stengel has established herself as one of the top players in the country this season. She leads all ACC players with 14 goals and ranks second in the conference with 32 points - with both marks tying the Wake Forest single-season records.
Bledsoe has started all 19 game in net for the Deacons, the most of any Wake Forest freshman goalkeeper in program history. She has made 59 saves and holds a 1.25 goals against average this year.
The Seminoles have been one of the best defensive teams in the league this season, conceding only 11 goals this year - tied for the fewest of any ACC team. Goalkeeper Kelsey Wys has the best save percentage in the conference at .867 and ranks second in the league with a 0.60 goals against average. On the offensive end, Janice Cayman has led the Noles with nine goals and 23 points this season.
Wake Forest has never won the ACC Championship, but has reached the finals once and the semifinals on six occasions. This is the third consecutive year and the seventh time in the last eight years that the tournament has been held at WakeMed Soccer Park.
