Black Clinches Series with 3-0 Win Over Gold

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Black team broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the sixth inning to claim a 3-0 series-clinching win over Gold on Friday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

With the win, Black wins the series three games to one. Due to the series-clinching win, game five of the series, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, will not be played.

Freshman John McLeod earned the win on the mound for Black, tossing 4.2 hitless innings and striking out four. Sophomore Niko Spezial picked up the save, throwing the final 2.1 innings of the contest and giving up just one hit, while fanning two. Freshman Joe Max Floyd took the loss in relief for Gold, giving up three runs on three hits over 2.0 innings.

Freshman Nate Jones pitched well in the start for Gold, pitching three shutout innings and allowing just one hit with two strikeouts. Fellow rookie Chuck Schlegel turned in two hitless innings with two punch outs.

Sophomore Pat Blair led the Black team offensively, going 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks. Sophomore Brett Armour added a hit and a run scored, while freshmen Conor Keniry and Bryan Willis each contributed a hit.

Redshirt sophomore Mac Williamson had the only hit in the contest for the Gold team.

The only runs of the contest were scored in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Armour singled to left center and advanced to second after a walk to Jack Carey. Consecutive passed balls allowed Armour to score the first run of the game and moved Carey to third. After a walk to Willis, Carey scored the second run of the game, also crossing the plate on a passed ball. Grant Shambley reached on a fielder's choice and then moved to second on an error by the shortstop. Blair drove in Shambley on a single to right field to make the score, 3-0.

Wake Forest opens the 2011 regular season on Friday, February 18, at LSU. First pitch against the Tigers is set for 8 p.m.
