COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Wake Forest volleyball team pushed Maryland all night but dropped all three sets by three points or less Friday evening at Comcast Pavilion.
The loss drops the Demon Deacons to 16-11 on the year and 8-8 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland is now 18-10, 9-7 ACC. The Deacs had their chances in every set, as the Terrapins won 25-23, 25-23, 25-22.
Senior Kristen White led the Deacons with a season-high 13 kills on the evening. She also recorded her third double-double of the season by adding 10 digs.
Sophomore Andrea Beck was the only other player to tally at least 10 kills with 11 on the night, while senior Kelsey Jones was solid with 34 assists, seven digs and three blocks.
Set 1 was as close as it could be, as neither team led by more than two points for the entire set. At 21-21, a Maryland attack error gave Wake a one-point lead, but the Terps scored two straight on a kill and a Wake Forest error. White recorded a kill to tie the set at 23-23 before two more mistakes cost the Deacons. A player was in the net to make the score 24-23, and a hitting error ended the set in favor of Maryland.
Maryland built a little more separation in Set 2 by taking leads of 12-8 and 19-14. After a timeout, the Deacs went on a five to nothing run to tie the score at 19-19. During the stretch, White and Beck each had a kill and Beck teamed up with both White and senior Lauren McIntyre to record two blocks.
Wake Forest continued to pressure the Terps and eventually took the lead at 22-21 after a kill by freshman Kylie Hargreaves. Maryland then ended the set on a 4-1 run take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
The Terrapins attempted to deliver the knockout blow early in Set 3 by taking a 7-2 lead and keeping the five-point cushion until 18-13. Wake Forest again proved resilient and tied the set at 19-19. The Demon Deacons stayed tied with the Terps at 22-22, but three consecutive hitting errors by Wake allowed Maryland to win the match.
Wake Forest will play its final regular season road match on Sunday when it travels to Boston College at Noon.
