WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Behind a huge 20-kill, nine-dig performance from freshman outside hitter McKenzie Adams, Virginia defeated the Wake Forest volleyball team in three sets Friday evening at Reynolds Gym.
The Cavaliers (14-14, 8-10 ACC) defeated the Demon Deacons (18-12, 10-9 ACC) 25-23, 25-16, 25-18.
Adams hit .325 from the outside on the night and also contributed two aces and two blocks. Wake Forest's Kadija Fornah led the Demon Deacons for the second consecutive evening, this time with 13 kills, six digs and a block.
Senior Megan Thornberry posted 14 digs and tied a career-high with six assists, while fellow senior Kristen White also reached double-digits in digs with 12.
The Demon Deacons had their best chance to win a set in Set 1 when they lost by the minimum two points. Virginia jumped out to an early 8-3 lead that culminated in back-to-back aces by Simone Asque. Wake Forest chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the set at 18-18 after a block by White and sophomore Andrea Beck.
Wake's blocking kept them in the set, as they recorded all five of the blocks in the match in Set 1 alone.
The set remained tied at 21-21, but the Cavaliers scored two straight points to take a 23-21 lead and force Wake to take its final timeout. The cushion was all Virginia needed, as the teams traded points for the remainder of the set.
The beginning of Set 2 mirrored the end of Set 1 with neither team scoring consecutive points until Virginia accomplished the feat to make the score 6-5. Kills by White and Fornah recaptured the lead for Wake Forest at 7-6, but Virginia scored six straight points behind the serving of Rachel Gray to take a 12-7 lead.
A service error and kill by Beck momentarily halted the Cavalier momentum, but Virginia continued to keep the pressure on by scoring four straight points and taking a 16-9 lead, giving them all the cushion they would need for the rest of the set.
Set 3 was a struggle for the Demon Deacons, as they committed 12 hitting errors and only had nine kills for a -.081 hitting percentage. Fornah tried to keep Wake Forest in the match with six kills over a 13-point span, but Virginia eventually prevailed with 11 kills and just five errors in the set.
Wake Forest will finish the regular season on Tuesday when it hosts Duke at 7 p.m. at Reynolds Gym. The team will be celebrating Senior Night to honor the four Demon Deacon seniors, Kelsey Jones, Lauren McIntyre, Megan Thornberry and Kristen White.
