GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest forward Katie Stengel continued to gain recognition for her spectacular rookie season as she was named the 2010 ACC Freshman of the Year as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Stengel also received First Team All-ACC honors, and she was selected to the All-Freshman Team along with fellow forward Rachel Nuzzolese. All of the conference honors are selected through voting by the league's 11 head coaches.
Stengel is the third Demon Deacon to be named ACC Freshman of the Year and is the first since Joline Charlton took home the award in 1999. The Melbourne, Fla. native is one of three freshmen on this year's 11-member first team and is the the first freshman in Wake Forest history to receive First Team All-ACC recognition.
Nuzzolese and Stengel give the Demon Deacons multiple representatives on the All-Freshman team for the first time since 2006, when Kaley Fountain, Allie Sadow and Sarah Winslow all made the rookie squad.
With all that she has accomplished so far this season, Stengel has made a strong argument for being the best freshman in the nation. She leads ACC with 14 goals this season and ranks second in the conference with 32 points - marks which tie her for the Wake Forest single-season records in both categories. She is tied for the national freshman goal-scoring lead, and ranks second among national rookies in points.
Nuzzolese has also established herself as a premier player in her first year for Wake Forest, scoring nine goals and 23 points in 11 game before suffering a season-ending injury. Despite playing just over half of Wake Forest's games this season, she still ranks in the top 10 in the ACC in both goals and points, and is the conference leader in goals and points per game.
Virginia's Sinead Farrelly was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year, and North Carolina freshman Crystal Dunn was the Defensive Player of the Year. Maryland's Brian Pensky took home Coach of the Year honors.
Florida State and North Carolina led all teams with eight players selected to the All-ACC and All-Freshman teams. Wake Forest was one of four schools to have multiple players named to the All-Freshman team.
Wake Forest will take on Florida State on Wednesday at 2:30 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship, which will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. All matches from the tournament will be streamed live by theACC.com. For complete tournament information, including ticket information and directions, please visit the official tournament website.
