RALEIGH, N.C. - Behind a .343 hitting percentage, the Wake Forest volleyball team swept NC State 25-16, 25-23, 25-17 Thursday evening at Reynolds Coliseum.
The Demon Deacons (15-9, 8-6 ACC) have now defeated the Wolfpack (13-13, 3-11 ACC) an impressive 25 consecutive meetings. The last time that the Pack defeated the Deacs was on November 21, 1997.
The win puts Wake Forest in fourth place in the ACC all by itself, a half game behind Georgia Tech for third place and a half game ahead of Miami, Florida State and Maryland.
Senior setter Kelsey Jones had 31 assists, seven digs and tied a career-high with seven kills to lead the way for the Deacons. With the seven digs, Jones has 1,001 digs for her career and is the eighth person in school history to eclipse the 1,000-dig mark. In addition, Jones is the first person in school history to have more than 4,000 assists and 1,000 digs.
Jones' favorite target against the Wolpack was junior middle Carlin Salmon who led all players with 12 kills. Salmon also added three blocks and hit at a .346 clip to held the Deacon cause.
Wake Forest was very effective on offense with 45 kills and just 10 errors on 102 attempts. Senior Kristen White was a big contributor to that with six kills and no errors on 15 swings (.400), while Jones was also error free (7k-0e-10a).
The Demon Deacons were better than NC State defensively, as well, with 46 digs compared to just 43 for the Wolfpack. Senior Megan Thornberry had a match-high 14 digs to lead the Deacs.
With the score tied 6-6 in Set 1, NC State got a kill from Alex Smith and an attack error by Salmon to take an 8-6 lead. The Demon Deacons would then take control after going on an 11-2 run and capturing a 17-10 advantage. Several attack errors by the Pack aided the Deacons during the run.
NC State would never get closer than six points for the duration of Set 1, as the Demon Deacons took a 1-0 lead with a 25-16 set victory.
Set 2 was played closer throughout, as Wake Forest did not force NC State to use its first timeout until taking a 16-13 lead. The Deacs scored one more point out of the break to go up four, but the Wolfpack then scored three straight to bring their deficit back to one point at 17-16.
Wake Forest went up 23-19 and it seemed as if the Deacs would cruise to a 2-0 lead, but NC State went on a 4-1 run to make the score 24-23 before Salmon ended the set with a kill on an assist by Jones.
The Demon Deacons again dominated Set 3 and never trailed. The Deacs hit a fantastic .471 during the set, as Salmon had five kills and Jones had four kills on four attempts.
Wake Forest will return head back east tomorrow to take on North Carolina at 7 p.m.
