WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team concluded play of the Wake Forest Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Indoor Tennis Center, as they went 6-1 in singles matches. Sophomore Kathryn Talbert was the top performer in the tournament, finishing with 16 total points.
After three days of play, the Demon Deacons went a combined 10-1 in doubles play and 12-1 in singles action.
In the first match of the day against Tennessee, No. 34 Martina Pavelec took down No. 119 Rosalia Alda by a score of 7-6 (2), 7-5 at the top singles position. Playing at the third spot, Talbert claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory of her own over Whitney Wofford.
The Deacons continued their strong play, as they went a perfect 4-0 against LSU in the later match of the day. After dropping her first set, Pavelec fought back to take a 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 win against No. 122 Whitney Wolf.
Talbert moved up a spot to the No. 2 singles position where she defeated Kaitlin Burns 6-1, 6-0. Playing at the third spot, senior Emilee Malvehy notched a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Yvette Vlaar, and Ryann Cutillo rounded out play for the Demon Deacons as she defeated Ariel Morton in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
En route to winning the tournament title, Talbert was undefeated in singles play, and she dropped only six games in six sets of singles throughout the entire weekend. She also teamed with teammate Kayla Duncan for the first time in doubles play to post four wins at the top position.
Finishing behind Talbert was North Carolina State's Sandhya Nagaraj in second place with 15 points and Pavelec in third with 14 points. No. 79 Duncan and North Carolina State's Sanaa Bhambri finished tied for fourth place with 12 points apiece.
The tournament leader board was calculated by awarding players three points for a win at No. 1 doubles or No. 1 and No. 2 singles, two points for a win at No. 2 doubles or No. 3 and No. 4 singles, and one point for a win at No. 3 doubles or No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
The tournament was the Deacons' final event of the fall season. Wake Forest will open dual match play on January 22 when they host Richmond at the Indoor Tennis Center.
