WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team will be taking a break for ACC play and focusing its attention on non-conference foe North Carolina Central at Reynolds Gym on Tuesday night.
The match will mark the first time that the two schools have competed in volleyball since October 23, 1980, a 3-1 win for the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest and NC Central have played just three times in history with the Demon Deacons winning all three matchups. Wake also won on October 12, 1976 and October 19, 1979.
The Demon Deacons will be playing their first opponent outside of the ACC since defeating Charlotte on the road 3-0 on September 21. Wake has an impressive 7-3 record this year against non-conference opponents and has posted a 15-10 record overall. The Eagles are 9-23 overall this year and 3-7 on the road.
Wake Forest will look for offense primarily from junior Kadija Fornah and sophomore Andrea Beck. Fornah has a team-high 281 kills on the season, while Beck, who was recently named ESPN Academic All-District, is second on the team with 262 kills. Beck also has a team-best .329 hitting percentage.
Junior Carlin Salmon has also surpassed the 200-kill mark on the year with 205 and leads the team with 95 blocks. Senior Kelsey Jones has done a nice job running the offense with a team-best 729 digs, while senior Megan Thornberry anchors the Deacon defense with 385 digs.
Jzima-Malaki Kalao has dished out 882 assists to lead the team this year. Her favorite target has been Belinda Behncke-Biney who leads the team with 393 kills, more than double that of second place. Behncke-Biney also leads the team with 46 aces and is second with 195 digs.
Wake Forest will return to ACC play this weekend when it travels to Maryland and Boston College. The Demon Deacons are scheduled to play the Terrapins on Friday a 7 p.m. before playing at Boston College on Sunday at Noon.
