Wake Forest Opens ACC Tournament with No. 20 Virginia

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team opens play at the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. against No. 20 Virginia at WakeMed Soccer Park's Koka Booth Stadium in Cary, N.C.

All session packages for the ACC Tournament are $25 for adults and $15 for youth, while single-session tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth.

The Demon Deacons earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament after finishing the regular season with an 8-8-2 overall record and a 4-3-1 mark in conference matches. Wake Forest won three of its last four matches to close the season, but the Deacs are coming off a 2-1 loss at No. 21 Duke in the team's most recent action.

Wake Forest is led offensively by All-ACC Second Team choice Andy Lubahn, who has scored a team-leading eight goals and 16 points on the year. ACC All-Freshman Team honoree Luca Gimenez is second on the team with 12 points, scoring five goals and two assists.

All-ACC Second Team goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald has started every game this season for the Deacs, compiling an 8-8-2 record with a 1.24 goals against average. Fitzgerald leads the ACC with 81 saves and has four shutouts on the year.

Virginia, the No. 6 seed in the ACC Tournament, finished the regular season with a 10-4-3 overall record and 2-4-2 mark in conference matches. The Cavaliers closed the regular season losing two of their last three matches, including a 2-0 loss at NC State last Saturday in the regular season finale.

M.A.C. Hermann Trophy candidate Will Bates leads Virginia with 20 points on the season, scoring eight goals and four assists. Brian Ownby has added seven goals and three assists to rank second on the team with 17 points. Brian Span has contributed five goals and three helpers for 13 points.

Diego Restrepo has played every minute in goal this season for UVa, posting a 10-4-3 record with a 0.74 goals against average. Restrepo has seven clean sheets on the season and has made 69 saves.

Wake Forest and Virginia have met 46 times previously with the Cavaliers holding a 33-7-6 edge in the all-time series. Virginia is Wake Forest's most common opponent in the ACC Tournament with the two teams meeting 13 times before Wednesday's encounter. Virginia possesses a 10-0-3 record against the Deacs in the conference tournament. The Cavaliers advanced on penalty kicks in the semifinals of the 2009 ACC Tournament. Wake Forest claimed a 1-0 win in the regular season meeting earlier this year in Charlottesville.
