WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest women's soccer player Katie Stengel was named to Soccer America's All-Freshman First Team, as announced Wednesday. In her first season as a Demon Deacon in 2010, Stengel led freshmen nationwide in goals (16) and points (37), in addition to setting new Wake Forest single-season records in both categories.
The Melbourne, Fla. native finished the year as the Atlantic Coast Conference leader in both goals and points, becoming the first-ever Wake Forest player to lead the league in either category and the first freshman to lead the ACC in both categories since 1999.
The Soccer America recognition is latest in a series of awards and accomplishments that have already made Stengel one of the most decorated players ever to put on the old gold and black. The forward was earlier named the ACC Freshman of the Year and TopDrawerSoccer's National Rookie of the Year, and was the first-ever Wake Forest player to be named a semifinalist for the prestigious M.A.C. Hermann Trophy.
Other awards Stengel has accumulated for her prolific season include NSCAA Second Team All America and First Team All-Southeast Region, First Team All-ACC, All-ACC Tournament Team and ACC All-Freshman Team.
The ACC was well-represented on the Soccer America All-Freshman First Team, claiming five of the 11 spots, including Freshman of the Year Crystal Dunn (North Carolina).
