PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - Through almost two rounds of the JU Invitational at the famed TPC of Sawgrass Stadium Course, the Wake Forest men's golf team is 26-over and sits in third place. Senior Brendan Gielow leads the team as he is just one shot off the lead.
Play was suspended due to darkness shortly after 6 pm Monday evening and will resume with a shotgun start at 8:30 am Tuesday morning.
The Deacons currently sit third at 26-over par and trail East Tennessee State and Clemson who are tied at the top at 14-over.
"It was like a bad stock market out there today," Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas said when asked about the conditions. "The course is playing really long and you just had to take your medicine on some holes and just try to make bogey if you put yourself in a bad spot. But overall, I think we did well. We played much better in the afternoon and that kept us in it. We still have a good shot tomorrow if we can come out ready to go."
As a team, the Deacons shot a 20-over 308 in the opening round but regrouped and were just 6-over par when play was called. Each player has around two or three holes to finish in the second round before starting the final round.
Gielow was 3-under par through his the first eight holes in the morning and had a share of the lead. But he then bogeyed the next five holes to slip back to 2-over par. After three-straight pars at Nos. 14-16, Gielow made a double-bogey five at the famed 17th and would finish with an opening round 76.
He then got off to another good start in the afternoon and was 2-under through eight. Despite a bogey at the ninth, he made back-to-back birdies at 11 and 12 to get to 3-under for the round and 1-over for the day. Currently, he sits in a tie for second at 2-over, just one shot behind Corbin Mills of Clemson.
Fellow senior Travis Wadkins was even through his first 11 holes in the morning but would finish a 76. He then had four bogeys and one birdie in the afternoon round and currently sits at 7-over par with a couple of holes to play in the second round.
After starting 1-under through his first four holes, freshman Charlie Harrison hit a rough patch and was 7-over in his next five holes. But he righted the ship and would finish the final nine holes at just 2-over par to post an opening round 80.
He made the turn to the afternoon round and birdied both the par-5 ninth and the par-5 11th and is just 1-over par on his second round. He will start on the tough par-4 18th Tuesday morning to finish-up his first 36-holes.
Sophomore Lee Bedford had a tough opening round as he made four double-bogeys on his way to an 80. But like the rest of the team, he came back stronger in the afternoon. Despite being 5-over through 11 holes, he made birdies at Nos. 13 and 16 and is 3-over with three holes to play.
Freshman Evan Beck made a pair of double-bogeys in the opening round but he countered them four birdies and would go to card a solid morning round of 76. He made three more birdies through 16 holes in the afternoon but also made three doubles and is 8-over on his round.
The second round will resume with a shotgun start at 8:30 am Tuesday morning. The field will not be repaired for the final round as the third round will start immediately.
