Wake Forest Drops 5-2 Decision to Virginia

Winston-Salem, N.C. - Playing in their second match in as many days, the Wake Forest women's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 40 Virginia on Sunday afternoon at Leighton Stadium to wrap up weekend play. Wake Forest drops to 8-12 (2-6 ACC) on the season, while the Cavaliers improve to 12-7 (5-4 ACC).
Virginia claimed the doubles point with wins at the top two positions. Junior Katarina Reveche and sophomore Martina Pavelec were leading 6-3 in the third doubles match when play was stopped since Virginia clinched the doubles point.
It proved to be a tough afternoon in singles play for the Deacs, but Pavelec and senior Sasha Kulikova earned solid victories at the top two spots, respectively. Kulikova's strong play carried over from yesterday, as she recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Virginia's Emily Fraser to remain undefeated in singles play for the weekend. No. 64 Pavelec dropped her first set against Virginia's 42nd ranked Lindsey Hardenbergh by a score of 7-5, and then found herself down 5-0 in the second set before battling back to claim a 7-6 tiebreaker victory. A third set super tiebreaker was played, and Pavelec claimed the match point with a 10-8 tiebreaker victory.
Wake Forest will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at Leighton Stadium when they host in-state rival Duke at 3 p.m.
