WEYMOUTH, Mass. - Strong singles play led Wake Forest to a 4-2 road victory over Boston College on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Deacons improve to 10-12 (3-7 Atlantic Coast Conference), while the Eagles fall to 6-14 (1-9 ACC).
Wake's 36th-ranked doubles team of senior Sasha Kulikova and freshman Kathryn Talbert picked up an 8-5 win over BC's Alex Kelleher and Olga Khmylev at the top doubles spot. But the Eagles took the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to claim the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
The Demon Deacons bounced back in singles, losing only one match to seal the overall victory. No. 40 Martina Pavalec easily knocked off Alex Kelleher 6-1, 6-1 at the top of the singles lineup. Sasha Kulikova defeated the Boston College's Katharine Attwell 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, improving her team-best conference singles record to 6-3.
Sophomore Ryann Cutillo broke a five-match losing streak by defeating Brittany Delaney 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 6 position. Emilee Malvehy gutted out a 6-5, 5-7, 6-3 win over Khmylev at No. 4 singles.
Wake Forest will close the regular season with a match at Maryland on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Deacons will begin play in the 2010 ACC Tennis Championships in Cary, N.C. on April 22.
