Deacons Defeat Maryland 5-2 to End Regular Season

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team closed the regular season on a high note, posting a 5-2 road win over Maryland on Sunday. The Deacons will head into the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Tennis Championships with a record of 10-13 (4-7 ACC).

With the loss, the Terrapins fall to 5-12 (0-11 ACC).

For the second consecutive match, Wake Forest ended the day victorious despite losing the doubles point. Maryland swept the doubles matches to take an early lead, but the Deacs answered back with wins in five of the six singles matches.

40th-ranked Martina Pavelec got the first point for the Deacons with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Maggie MacKeever at the top singles spot. Emilee Malvehy easily defeated Julia Huschke 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to put Wake Forest in front.

Ryann Cutillo topped Lexi Brand 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot, and Aileen Davis came through in only her second singles appearance in ACC play, clinching the match for the Deacs with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Burce Kurkan at No. 6.

Senior Sasha Kulikova survived a tough first set to dispatch Maryland's Lisa Miller 7-6(7), 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Kulikova has a 7-3 record in ACC singles matches this season, and it marks the third year that she has won at least seven singles matches in conference play.
