WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--The Wake Forest men's team will kick off the 2010 ACC Championships against the Maryland Terrapins on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. All matches will be held at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
The 23rd ranked Demon Deacons earned the No. 6 seed in the tournament, while Maryland claimed the No. 11 seed. Wake Forest will enter the match with an overall record of 13-8 (7-4 Atlantic Coast Conference), while Maryland comes in at 13-12 (1-10 ACC).
Wake Forest is coming off a 6-1 victory against Maryland on Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem. The Deacons claimed all six singles matches on the day, with No. 27 Steven Forman leading the way at the top spot. Forman notched a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Maryland's John Collins, and freshmen Danny Kreyman and Zach Leslie also posted victories in straight sets. With the win, Forman posted his 22nd singles victory on the year, with an 8-2 record against ACC foes.
Freshman standout Tripper Carleton has moved up five spots in the ITA national rankings, from No. 43 to No. 38, after his victory over Maryland's Sergio Wyss by a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Carleton now stands at 12-8 on the year, including a 5-5 record in conference play.
Each of Maryland's players have seen considerable time at a variety of singles positions, but Sergio Wyss holds the most impressive record at the number one spot with a mark of 6-3. Freshman John Collins leads the Terps on the year with an overall record of 22-12. Fellow freshman Tommy Laine, who normally plays at the No. 1 or No. 2 position, finished the regular season with a 16-9 mark.
In doubles play, Wake's 19th-ranked duo of Forman and junior Iain Atkinson will look to continue their dominating play at the number one position. The pair is 20-8 on the year and has posted wins in six of their last ten matches.
The Terrapin tandem of Jesse Kiuru and Tommy Laine enters Thursday's match with an 11-6 overall record, although they have dropped all five conference matches this season.
Wake Forest will be looking to build upon their success from last year's ACC Championships, as the Deacs advanced to the finals before falling 4-0 in a tough match to top-seeded Virginia.
"We feel good," said head coach Jeff Zinn. "It was nice to have some days off before just playing two conference matches at home. It was good to have some guys who worked hard the whole year get some exposure out there."
The winner of Thursday's match will face No. 3 seed and 18th-ranked North Carolina in a quarterfinal match on Friday at 3 p.m. The Deacs posted a 4-3 win over the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill earlier this season.
An admission ticket to all matches of the tournament can be purchased for $14 for adults and $10 for seniors, college students, and youth (ages 9-17). Children age 8 and under will receive free admission. Single-day tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for seniors, college students, and youth.
Several ticket promotions are being offered through the ACC in order to encourage fan attendance at the matches. On Thursday, admission is free to all spectators from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Friday is USTA Day, and USTA members that show their membership card will receive $2 off a daily ticket price or championship pass. On Saturday, Cary Tennis Park Annual Pass Holders will receive complimentary admission.
Streaming video of Saturday's semifinals and Sunday's championship matches will be available on the championship website.
