No. 1 Tar Heels Down Deacons in ACC Quarterfinals

CARY, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team fell 4-0 to top-seeded North Carolina Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Tennis Championships played at Cary Tennis Park.
The final score was not indicative of the competitiveness of the match. North Carolina, ranked No. 1 in the country, won the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, but the ninth-seeded Deacons did not go down without a fight in singles.
UNC extended its lead to 3-0 with victories at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, but the clinching point would be much harder to come by as the remaining matches were hard-fought affairs. The Tar Heels eventually secured the match when Sophie Grabinski edged Ryann Cutillo 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 5 spot.
The remaining matches were stopped once the overall match was decided, but at the time, the Deacs looked to be in good shape against some of Carolina's better players. At the top position, Wake's No. 47 Martina Pavelec dropped the first set in a tiebreak to No. 22 Sanaz Marand, but stormed back to take the second set 6-0. Marand was leading 2-1 in the final set when the match was stopped.
Sasha Kulikova won a first-set tiebreak over No. 51 Katrina Tsang at No. 2 and the match ended with her trailing 4-3 in the second set. Emilee Malvehy held a 3-2 final-set advantage over Jelena Durisic at No. 3 singles when play was suspended.
The Tar Heels will face the winner of No. 4 seed Duke and No. 5 seed Florida State Saturday at 10 a.m. The championship match will be held on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Deacons will hope to receive an at-large bid to the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships. Brackets will be announced May 4 on a selection show broadcast by ESPNEWS.
