CARY, N.C. - The sixth-seeded Wake Forest men's tennis team fell 4-0 to second-seeded Duke Saturday in the semifinals of the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Tennis Tournament held at Cary Tennis Park.
Duke picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead. At No. 3, Torsten Wietoska and Alain Michel defeated Tripper Carleton and Zach Leslie 8-3. At the top position, Henrique Cunha and Reid Carleton, the top-ranked doubles team in the nation, edged No. 19 Steven Forman and Iain Atkinson 8-6 to clinch the point.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead as No. 7 Cunha defeated Forman at No. 1 singles and No. 105 Dylan Arnould downed No. 106 Iain Atkinson on Court 3, but Duke's fourth point would not come as easily.
At No. 6, Wake's Zach Leslie had split sets with Luke Marchese in a contentious match. Yesterday's hero Danny Kreyman had fallen behind Jared Pinsky 5-0 in the final set, but rallied back to 6-6 to force a tiebreak. Jonathan Wolff had bounced back after dropping the first set to Wietoska, and was leading 2-0 in the third.
The brother vs. brother matchup of Wake Forest's Tripper Carleton and Duke's Reid Carleton on Court 2 was deep into the final set. Reid had an opportunity to serve for the match at 5-3, but Tripper broke back to get on serve at 4-5. However, Reid gathered himself in the next game and broke Tripper for an 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 win that clinched victory for the Blue Devils.
Duke will face top-ranked Virginia in the championship match Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Deacons will hope to receive an at-large bid to the 2010 NCAA Tennis Championships. The brackets will be announced live on a selection show broadcast by ESPNEWS on May 4.
